Knowing you are pregnant

If you think you are pregnant, it is important to have a pregnancy test early.

A pregnancy test can be done with a urine or blood sample. You can buy a urine pregnancy test from a pharmacy or supermarket and follow the instructions on the packet.

A blood sample pregnancy test can be done through your local Family Planning NSW clinic, GP practice, Women’s Health Centre or health service.

The sooner you find out you are pregnant, the more time you will have to think about your pregnancy options.

Working out how pregnant you are

It is important to know how many weeks pregnant you are (pregnancy gestation). The first day of your last menstrual period is used to estimate how many weeks pregnant you are. For example, if it has been four weeks from the first day of your last period, the pregnancy is at 4 weeks gestation. The most accurate way to know how pregnant you are is to have an ultrasound.

An ultrasound can tell you how many weeks pregnant you are, which will help you understand your pregnancy options.
